Mussel Seed Grading

Mechanical grading machines, whether on a vessel or on land, are common place when mussel seed grading . One example of a seed grader uses a spinning cylinder constructed of pipes, widening the space in between each pipe as the mussels move down the line. As the mussels move through the machinery, they fall through the widening pipes and are automatically sorted into size specific bins.

Another example of a seed grader is a vibrating sieve. Mussels are feed onto the machinery and by using different size screens, are sorted according to size.

Regardless of the grading method, the importance in mussel seed grading is that it allows farmers to grow a consistent product and avoid large growths of mussels on their lines.
